As a student of Budo since 1984, Sabastian is a U.S. Army Veteran who has completed Post-Graduate programs in Japanese Studies at Sophia University in Tokyo and Advanced Public Policy at Old Dominion University in Virginia.  For several years he administered International Military Education and Training to the Japanese Self Defense Forces as part of the Department of the Army Security Assistance Program.  He has competed and placed in various Budo Arts in both the U.S. and in Japan. In 2023 Sabastian Sensei was nominated for the Japan Foundation Award and in 2024 received the Korosho award from the Kokusai Budoin (IMAF JAPAN) for meritorious service to Budo. He is dedicated to protecting, preserving and expanding traditional Japanese martial arts (Budo) and Japanese Fine Arts (Bijutsu) while fostering well-disciplined and capable individuals through participation in physical, mental and spiritual training.

  • Mayumi Soeda- Japanese Outreach Coordinator

Mrs. Soeda is from Nagasaki, Japan and has a strong passion for Japanese language and literature. She has master’s degree in linguistics from Nagasaki University and a bachelor’s degree in Japanese literature from Kumamoto University. Soeda Sensei has been a licensed teacher for middle and high school Japanese literature for 32 years and specializes in teaching Japanese language at the university level. Furthermore, Mayumi-san also successfully passed the Japanese Language Teaching Competency Test, demonstrating her expertise in this field. In addition to her teaching qualifications, she is a Japanese calligraphy instructor (Shodo) with a 5 Dan ranking in calligraphy with a Level 2 achievement in the Kanji Proficiency Exam. She is married and has 2 grown children.

Basil sempai is a graduate from Purdue University with a Bachelor's degree in Geology and currently works as a Project Coordinator. As a child, He lived in Japan when his parents were on active duty at Misawa Air Force Base. He participates in many combat related sports and enjoys wearing his authentic samurai armor at related events. When the dojo opened in 2019, he was the first to sign up for iaido and has found his calling in helping others and himself work towards becoming better martial artists and continues to seek higher quality in himself and others.

Practicing martial arts since he was 13 years old, Trevor has attained Dan grades in several styles and Kyu grades in others. Since 2020 Trevor sempai has been serving in the Florida Army National Guard as an IT specialist and satellite systems operator and is a Non-Commissioned Officer.. He hold’s an Associate's degree in information technology from Purdue University and is working on his public school state teaching license.  Trevor enjoys learning and teaching principles that cross pollinate many arts, or as Miyamoto Musashi said, “from one thing, know ten thousand.”

Chelsey Velilla

​Chelsey's interest in archery started when she was in middle school and involved in their western archery program. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a  Bachelor's degree in Art Education.  Chelsey Sempai spent 12 rewarding years teaching art at the elementary level for Newport News Public Schools in Virginia and was designated Teacher of the Year in 2012.  She was the former Gallery Manager and grant writer for Mount Dora Center of the Arts and is currently the Director of the Japanese Arts and Cultural programs for Arching Oaks Arts and Culture Center in Eustis, Florida and a certified Forest Therapy (shinrin Yoku) Guide.

Kenneth Wofford

​Ken is a retired medical commissioned officer from the United States Navy after having honorably served in many locations including Okinawa, Guam, and Iraq. He currently works as a nurse anesthetist and is also a full time professor at the University of South Florida training the next generation of nurse anesthetists. Ken Sempai has been a kyudoka since 2018 and comes to us from Tampa.  He is married and has 2 grown children.

Deidra Maroney

Deidra graduated top of her class from International Academy of Design and Technology with a degree in Graphic Design. She currently manages the day-to-day operations for a commercial contractor in central Florida. Deidra Sempai started Kyudo in 2019 and was one of the first students to join the Kyudo class. She is an avid baker and not only contributes to the class by assistant teaching but also by making some of her favorite recipes during tea time on Sundays.

Robert Gerzanic

Robert has been a student at Florida Budokan since January, 2021, and is currently ranked 1st Kyu in Gima-Ha Shotokan Karatedo. He resides in Clermont, but makes the drive to Eustis twice weekly because he loves the authentic experience that the Budokan provides.  Following a 2019 vacation to Japan, Robert knew that he wanted to train in traditional Japanese martial arts. Since joining Florida Budokan, he has had the opportunity to return to Japan to personally train with Ikuo Higuchi Hanshi, and looks forward to testing for black belt (shodan) sometime in October 2024. Outside of the Budokan, Robert is a History and Latin teacher, and enjoys spending time with his wife and son. “Teaching is what I do as a profession, so it’s been exciting to use my skills from the classroom to help karate students achieve their highest potential.”​

Kat Principe
  • ​Lateral Shodan Candidate
Kat has been practicing and instructing martial arts since 1986.  Her studies also expanded to Jun Li Kung Fu, Boxing, Kickboxing & Muay Thai.  Her greatest success was owning the 2nd largest Nick Cerio’s Kenpo school in the State of Rhode Island where she earned a sandan in Kempo karate.  After Grandmaster Cerio’s passing, she moved to Arizona where she began her training in Shuri-Ryu Karate, eventually owning two dojos and ranking at Nidan.  Kat then found her way to Florida in 2013 where she continued her martial arts training and pursued her passion for Life Coaching.  She is the Author of ‘Follow Your Own Path’ – a 6-week course on helping teens and parents to better communicate.  She continues to occasionally coach this program to teens and adults and has been cross training into Gima-Ha Shotokan Karatedo. She has two grown children and currently works as a Project Administrator for substation Services.

Ronda Maseman- Secretary
Ronda is a graduate from Florida State University. As an art connoisseur all her life, she received a bachelor's of Arts Degree in Children's Book Illustrations with a minor in Asian Art. She worked as a draftsman for many years and is an avid history lover and reader. She is a currently sought after artist for the Mount Dora Center of the Arts and creates props, sculpture and design which can be seen at a major theme park in Orlando.

Jonathan Forrester- Board member
Jonathan Forrester is a former US Navy submariner Non Commissioned Officer with a Master's Degree in Mathematics Education from Georgia State University and a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee.  He worked for over 18 years at Texas Instruments / Siemens Energy and Automation as a Software Engineer, a Marketing Manager and a Product Manager.  Mr. Forrester recently retired from the Sumter County School System where he was the Math Chair at a county high school.  He has been studying martial arts since 1972 and holds a 4th Dan in Shuriryu Karate, a Shodan in Shurite Jiujitsu, and a Shodan in Kobudo.  He is currently studying Iaido and Kyudo at the Florida Budokan.  He is married and has 1 daughter.

Wendy Smith-Wood- Board Member
Born in UK, Wendy Smith-Wood graduated with a degree in English and a post-grad in business studies. She attended Sandhurst Royal Military Academy and served four years as a commissioned officer in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. She served in Germany and England,  during which time she led caving expeditions to Peru, Sardinia and Crete. Following her dreams, she went to Alaska and spent 12 winters as a professional musher training dogs for the Iditarod sled dog race. In 1997 she crossed the American continent, coast to coast on a sled dog team, raising money for cancer charities. Mrs. Smith-Wood completed a 4,600 mile world record journey. The rest of her time was spent as a mountaineer in Central Asia and Africa leading expeditions and guiding adventures. In 2001 she met her husband and married in Alaska, settling on a remote homestead, working as a glacier specialist and developing a career as a textile artist specializing in Japanese shibori. In 2006 she established a tour company leading tours for artists all over the world and now she resides in Central Florida and Alaska. She took up Karate at the age of 60 and is also teaching traditional Japanese silk dyeing at that facility.

Kannushi Kato- Dojo Shinto Advisor
Taishi Kato is a graduate from the masters program at the University of London SOAS school of Religion. He is the 22nd member of his family to become a Shinto priest. Currently his family operates Ikuta Shine in Kobe, Japan and the 1000 year old Hattori Tenjingu Shrine in Osaka, Japan. Taishi Kato has dedicated himself to continuing the family tradition by spreading Shinto concepts to the English speaking world.  In 2020 he conducted a Shinto Purification ceremony at the Morikami Museum in south Florida and in conjunction with the Florida Budokan, He has co-written a book a called "Shinto Moments" with Sabastian Velilla.

Ryushin Sensei- Dojo Zen Advisor
Konrad Ryushin Marchaj, Sensei is a Zen priest in the tradition of Zen Buddhism, and a Dharma heir of the late John Daido Loori, Roshi. Ryushin Sensei was the Abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery from 2009-2015.  He received a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Yale University in 1976. He received his Medical Degree from Albany Medical College in 1980, working first as a pediatrician in Portland, Maine, and then serving in the US Navy as a physician for three years. He then returned to Albany for postgraduate training in Psychiatry. After completing his residency, he served as Medical Director for a community psychiatric outreach program. He left all this to enter full-time residential training at Zen Mountain Monastery in 1992 and is currently teaching independently.
