Sabastian Sensei has studied Budo since 1984 and is a U.S. Army veteran. He completed postgraduate studies in Japanese Studies at Sophia University in Tokyo and in Advanced Public Policy at Old Dominion University in Virginia. During his federal career, he administered International Military Education and Training for the Japan Self-Defense Forces under the U.S. Department of the Army’s Security Assistance Program. A lifelong martial artist, Sabastian has competed and earned recognition in multiple Budo disciplines in both the United States and Japan. His contributions to Japanese culture and martial arts have received international recognition. He was nominated for the prestigious Japan Foundation Award in 2023 and 2025, and in 2024 he received the Korosho Award from the Kokusai Budoin (IMAF Japan) for meritorious service to Budo. Dedicated to protecting, preserving, and expanding traditional Japanese martial arts (Budo) and fine arts (Bijutsu), Sabastian emphasizes the cultivation of discipline, character, and spiritual growth through training. He currently serves as President of both Kashimon Nihon Bijutsu Kaikan (Arching Oaks) and the Florida Budokan. Mrs. Soeda is from Nagasaki, Japan and has a strong passion for Japanese language and literature. She has master’s degree in linguistics from Nagasaki University and a bachelor’s degree in Japanese literature from Kumamoto University. Soeda Sensei has been a licensed teacher for middle and high school Japanese literature for 32 years and specializes in teaching Japanese language at the university level. Furthermore, Mayumi-san also successfully passed the Japanese Language Teaching Competency Test, demonstrating her expertise in this field. In addition to her teaching qualifications, she is a Japanese calligraphy instructor (Shodo) with a 5 Dan ranking in calligraphy with a Level 2 achievement in the Kanji Proficiency Exam. She is married and has 2 grown children.

Basil Sempai is a graduate of Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Geology, and currently works as a Project Coordinator. As a child, he lived in Japan while his parents were stationed on active duty at Misawa Air Force Base, giving him an early connection to Japanese culture. He is active in a variety of combat-related sports and enjoys wearing authentic samurai armor at martial arts and cultural events. Over the years, Basil has competed and placed in tournaments in Japan, Europe, and the United States, gaining valuable experience across international settings. When the dojo opened in 2019, Basil was the very first person to sign up for Iaido. Since then, he has found a meaningful path in helping both himself and others grow as martial artists. Dedicated, disciplined, and sincere in his training, he continues to pursue higher standards in his own development while encouraging the same commitment and quality in those around him.

Chelsey Velilla

Chelsey Velilla first discovered her passion for archery in middle school through a western archery program, beginning a lifelong appreciation for the discipline, focus, and beauty of the art. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education. For 12 years, Chelsey dedicated herself to teaching elementary art with Newport News Public Schools in Virginia, where she was honored as Teacher of the Year in 2012. Beyond the classroom, Chelsey has continued to support arts education and community cultural programming. She served as Gallery Manager and grant writer for the Mount Dora Center for the Arts, helping expand access to meaningful artistic experiences for the public. Today, Chelsey serves as the Director of Japanese Arts and Cultural Programs at Arching Oaks Arts and Culture Center in Eustis, Florida. She is also a certified Forest Therapy, or Shinrin Yoku, Guide, reflecting her commitment to nature, wellness, and mindful cultural practice. Chelsey also serves as Vice President of Kashimon Nihon Bijutsu Kaikan, where she helps preserve and promote Japanese cultural and artistic traditions. Through her work in education, arts administration, and cultural programming, she continues to build bridges between community, creativity, and Japanese tradition.

Kenneth Wofford

​Ken Sempai is a retired medical commissioned officer of the United States Navy, having honorably served in many locations throughout his career, including Okinawa, Guam, and Iraq. His military service reflects a life shaped by discipline, leadership, professionalism, and a deep commitment to service. After completing his Navy career, Ken continued serving others through the medical profession. He currently works as a nurse anesthetist and is also a full-time professor at the University of South Florida, where he helps educate and train the next generation of nurse anesthetists. His professional work requires precision, focus, calm judgment, and attention to detail—qualities that also strongly connect with the practice of Kyudo. Ken has been a dedicated kyudoka since 2018 and comes to Florida Budokan from Tampa. Through his training, he brings a steady presence, mature perspective, and sincere respect for the traditions of Japanese archery. His background in both military and medical service gives him a unique appreciation for discipline, patience, and responsibility within the dojo. As a senior student, Ken Sempai supports the Kyudo program through his example, commitment, and quiet leadership. He continues to train with humility while encouraging others to approach the art with focus, respect, and perseverance. Ken is married and has two grown children. He remains a valued member of the dojo community and continues to embody the spirit of lifelong learning through his practice of Kyudo.

Deidra Maroney

Deidra Sempai graduated at the top of her class from the International Academy of Design and Technology, where she earned her degree in Graphic Design. Her creative background, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail have carried into her professional life, where she currently manages the day-to-day operations for a commercial contractor in Central Florida. Deidra began her Kyudo training in 2019 and was among the very first students to join the Kyudo program at Florida Budokan. Since that time, she has remained a dedicated and steady presence in the dojo, continuing to develop her own practice while helping support the growth of newer students.  As an assistant instructor, Deidra contributes to the class through patient guidance, encouragement, and a sincere respect for the traditions of Kyudo. Her calm presence and commitment to training reflect the values of discipline, focus, and community that are central to the art. Outside of training, Deidra is also an avid baker. On Sundays, she often contributes to the warmth of the Kyudo class by sharing some of her favorite recipes during tea time. Through both her teaching and her generosity, Deidra helps create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for all students.

Darris Allen
  • Sandan
  • Darris Allen began his martial arts training in 1968 at the age of 11 in Albuquerque, New Mexico under Fred Absher at Karate Incorporated. His early training included both Tae Kwon Do and Kojosho Kempo Karate within the International Kojosho Karate Federation system. He progressed through the ranks and was awarded a 2nd degree black belt in 1981. He continued his training at Sandia Budokan under Fred Tart in Nippon Koryu Karate- Do, where he further developed his foundation in traditional Japanese karate before relocating to Florida in 1990. After moving to South Florida, Darris joined the Coral Springs dojo under Shigeru Takashina. Training within the Japan Karate Association system, he was promoted to Nidan in November 2014. In Colorado, he continued his training under Bruce Green in Boulder and Yutaka Yaguchi in Denver through the International Shotokan Karate Federation, and was
    promoted to Sandan (3rd degree black belt) in 2018. At that time his daughter began training alongside him and progressed to 1st Kyu (brown belt). She trained using the same belts as she progressed that Darris had earned decades earlier, reflecting a shared journey across generations. His daughter continued her training under Se Tai Sensei in Florida and was promoted to Shodan. Darris returned to Florida in 2019 and resumed training at the Coral Springs dojo under Carol Se Tai, the senior student of Takashina Sensei who assumed the role of Chief Instructor following his passing. In 2024, Darris joined Arching Oaks and has been assisting Sabastian Velilla as an
    instructor at Florida Budokan. Outside of the dojo, Darris is a partner in a commercial door and glass company and works as an architectural openings consultant. His professional career has been shaped by the discipline, structure, and attention to detail developed through decades of martial arts training. He continues to train and teach within Shotokan Karate, with an emphasis on strong fundamentals, disciplined training, and respect for the traditions of karate.

Kat Principe
  • ​Shodan 
Kat has been practicing and instructing martial arts since 1986, building a lifelong path rooted in discipline, perseverance, and service to others. Her martial arts journey has included extensive study across several systems, including Jun Li Kung Fu, boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Kempo Karate, Shuri-Ryu Karate, and Gima-Ha Shotokan Karatedo. One of her greatest accomplishments was owning the second-largest Nick Cerio’s Kenpo school in the State of Rhode Island, where she earned the rank of Sandan in Kempo Karate. Following the passing of Grandmaster Nick Cerio, Kat relocated to Arizona, where she continued her training in Shuri-Ryu Karate. There, she went on to own and operate two dojos and achieved the rank of Nidan. In 2013, Kat moved to Florida, where she continued her martial arts training while also pursuing her passion for personal development and life coaching. She is the author of Follow Your Own Path, a six-week course designed to help teens and parents improve communication, strengthen understanding, and build healthier relationships. She continues to occasionally coach this program for both teens and adults. Today, Kat cross-trains in Gima-Ha Shotokan Karatedo and continues to bring decades of experience, leadership, and encouragement to the martial arts community. Outside the dojo, she is the proud mother of two grown children and currently works as a Project Administrator for Substation Services.

Ronda Maseman- Secretary
Ronda is a graduate of Florida State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Children’s Book Illustration with a minor in Asian Art. A lifelong art connoisseur, she has always been drawn to the connection between visual storytelling, cultural history, and creative expression. Her professional background includes many years of work as a draftsman, where she developed a strong eye for detail, design, and technical precision. She is also an avid reader and history enthusiast, bringing a deep appreciation for historical context and artistic tradition into her creative work. Today, Ronda is a highly sought-after artist with the Mount Dora Center for the Arts. Her creative talents include prop-making, sculpture, and design, and her work can also be seen everyday at a major theme park in Orlando. Through her artistry, craftsmanship, and lifelong love of culture, Ronda continues to contribute meaningfully to Central Florida’s creative community.

Jonathan Forrester- Board member
Jonathan Forrester is a former United States Navy submariner and Non-Commissioned Officer whose life reflects a strong commitment to service, education, leadership, and lifelong martial arts training. He holds a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education from Georgia State University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee. Professionally, Mr. Forrester spent more than 18 years with Texas Instruments and Siemens Energy and Automation, where he served in several key roles, including Software Engineer, Marketing Manager, and Product Manager. He later continued his career in education, recently retiring from the Sumter County School System, where he served as the Mathematics Department Chair at a county high school.
Mr. Forrester has been studying martial arts since 1972 and brings decades of experience to his training. He holds the rank of 4th Dan in Shuri-Ryu Karate, Shodan in Shurite Jiujitsu, and Shodan in Kobudo. He is currently continuing his study of traditional Japanese martial arts through Iaido and Kyudo at the Florida Budokan.
Outside of his professional and martial arts life, Jonathan is married and has one daughter.

Wendy Smith-Wood- Board Member
Wendy Smith-Wood was born in the United Kingdom and graduated with a degree in English, followed by postgraduate studies in business. She later attended the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy and served for four years as a commissioned officer in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. During her military service in Germany and England, she also led caving expeditions to Peru, Sardinia, and Crete, reflecting an early life shaped by leadership, adventure, and exploration. Following her dreams, Wendy traveled to Alaska, where she spent 12 winters as a professional musher training sled dogs for the Iditarod. In 1997, she crossed the American continent coast to coast by sled dog team, raising money for cancer charities and completing a remarkable 4,600-mile world-record journey. Her spirit of adventure also led her into mountaineering, guiding, and expedition leadership throughout Central Asia and Africa. In 2001, she met and married her husband in Alaska, where they settled on a remote homestead. She later worked as a glacier specialist while developing her career as a textile artist specializing in Japanese shibori. In 2006, Wendy established a tour company, leading artist-focused tours around the world. Today, she resides between Central Florida and Alaska. At the age of 60, she began her karate journey and continues to share her artistic gifts by teaching traditional Japanese silk dyeing at the Florida Budokan.

Kannushi Kato- Dojo Shinto Advisor
.Taishi Kato is a graduate of the Master’s Program at the University of London’s SOAS School of Religion. He is the 22nd generation of his family to become a Shinto priest, continuing a long and respected hereditary tradition of service to Japanese spiritual culture. His family currently operates Ikuta Shrine in Kobe, Japan, as well as the 1,000-year-old Hattori Tenjingu Shrine in Osaka. Through this lineage, Taishi Kato has dedicated himself to preserving Shinto traditions while also helping introduce Shinto concepts to the English-speaking world. In 2020, he conducted a Shinto purification ceremony at the Morikami Museum in South Florida in conjunction with the Florida Budokan. He continues to conduct purification ceremonies for the Florida Budokan both in Florida and in Japan when members travel there, helping students and participants experience an important aspect of Japanese spiritual and cultural tradition. He has also co-written a book titled Shinto Moments with Sabastian Velilla, further supporting his mission of sharing Shinto thought, practice, and cultural understanding with a wider international audience.

Ryushin Sensei- Dojo Zen Advisor
Konrad Ryushin Marchaj, Sensei, is a Zen priest in the tradition of Zen Buddhism and a Dharma heir of the late John Daido Loori, Roshi. He served as Abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery from 2009 to 2015 and is currently teaching independently. Ryushin Sensei received his Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Yale University in 1976 and his Medical Degree from Albany Medical College in 1980. He first worked as a pediatrician in Portland, Maine, before serving for three years in the United States Navy as a physician. He later returned to Albany for postgraduate training in psychiatry and, after completing his residency, served as Medical Director for a community psychiatric outreach program. In 1992, Ryushin Sensei left his medical and psychiatric career to enter full-time residential training at Zen Mountain Monastery. His life’s path reflects a rare combination of scholarship, medical service, spiritual discipline, and contemplative practice. Through decades of Zen training and teaching, he continues to guide students with depth, clarity, and compassion.
